In Bill and Melinda Gates’s annual letter, published a few days ago, this video was included. And this is what Bill said,
“Investing in breakthrough ways to make energy cleaner and universally available is the most important investment we can make for the world.”
If you could pick just one thing to lower the price of to reduce poverty, by far you would pick energy.”
So here’s a shout out and a big thank you to everyone who invested in NewLight Africa.
Many companies selling solar to the poorest people base their model on providing safe, clean solar energy to rural consumers at the same weekly cost of kerosene. But that doesn’t really solve the problem that Bill Gates highlights here. As I learned in my time as CEO of SolarAid and SunnyMoney, people want to spend less on energy so that they can feed their families better, send their kids to school and invest in their farmsteads.
Here at NewLight Africa, we believe that it isn’t enough to get people switching to solar. We need to help them to dramatically reduce their energy expenditure so that they have other options to improve their lives.
